News and Questions About article nutrition
Resolved Question: Which is really better for a dog....?
I have two dogs. one very young, about 1 year old. And one quite old, 10 years old. I have read many articles about which is better - dry dog food or canned dog food, but all the articles don't actually tell you, they gabble on about how much nutrition a dog needs and the pros and cons, but they never get to the point . . . which is better? dry or canned?

Resolved Question: Proven studies that say corn is bad for dogs?
My parents have a senior golden retriever that eats Iams Healthy Naturals. Every week when my mother calls, she complains that the dog smells or is itchy, despite the fact that the dog does not have fleas. The dog was briefly on Wellness but went back to eating Iams because Wellness was too expensive. I've been trying to convince her to switch the dog back over to something better than the garbage he gets now- I've tried suggesting Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, etc. But her response is always that the vet says Iams is better, and that she trusts what the vet has to say over my opinions- I suppose her reasoning is that the vet has more schooling in canine nutrition than I do!
I feel that she would consider a better food if I showed her some clinical trials that say corn has no business being in dog food- but where can I find these? Please no crazy websites that state that you are poisoning your dog if you don't feed a raw diet, or weird articles about vaccines being the downfall of pets- thanks!
CC (HappyHolidays), Read my question. I KNOW corn is bad for dogs, I just need studies that say so. Christ on a cracker.
Resolved Question: Dietary Cholesterol vs Intracellular Cholesterol, Nutrition Labels?
On nutrition labels, does the amount of cholesterol listed reflect only dietary cholesterol? Or does it also include the intracellular cholesterol that is going to be made from the fats? I believe it's the earlier of the two, but a friend says it includes both. I've been trying to find a good article that explains it but have had no luck, so if you run across one let me know. Thank you.

Resolved Question: Summarize this article please...!!?
Here is the article:
"Study: Many Katrina Kids Anemic"
Dozens of infants and toddlers who lived in Louisiana's biggest trailer park for those displaced by Hurricane Katrina were anemic because of poor diets, at a rate more than four times the national average.
About 41 percent of 77 children under the age of 4 suffered from the condition this year, according to a study released Monday by the Children's Health Fund. Most, and possibly all, lived in the Renaissance Village trailer park in Baker.
Iron deficiency anemia can cause fatigue and learning problems. Severe deficiency in young children can delay growth and development and even cause heart murmurs.
The national rate for children that young is below 10 percent. Louisiana has one of the nation's highest anemia rates, with about 24 percent of all children below the age of 5 affected, according to the 2007 Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance survey.
Dr. Irwin Redlener, president of the Children's Health Fund and director of Columbia University's National Center for Disaster Preparedness, said the Renaissance Village rate was double the rate for homeless children the same age in New York City shelters.
The study used records for all 261 babies and children who lived in New Orleans until Katrina and were treated last year at CHF's mobile clinics at the trailer park and Baton Rouge schools, said Roy Grant, the organization's director of applied research and policy analysis.
While most of the affected children were storm evacuees, it was possible that a few were natives of Baton Rouge.
But studying the problem further and providing follow-up care for the children is difficult because the state closed the parks in May.
"Now it's more difficult, because they're no longer in the trailer area. They're dispersed around the state. So it's a little harder to get follow-up," said Dr. Jimmy Guidry, Louisiana's health officer.
Resolved Question: What would be a good basic summary of this article?
I just need help i am not good at summarizing. Teachers always complain because i tend to plagiarize.
Anorexia Nervosa 56% Genetic
Do not judge anorexics harshly. Their genes make them do it.
CHAPEL HILL – A new study led by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers estimates that 56 percent of the liability for developing anorexia nervosa is determined by genetics.
In addition, the study found that the personality trait of "neuroticism" (a tendency to be anxious and depressed) earlier in life is a significant factor associated with development of the eating disorder later.
Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric illness characterized by an individual’s refusal to maintain a minimally acceptable body weight, intense fear of weight gain and a distorted body image. It occurs primarily among females in adolescence and young adulthood and is associated with the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder.
People prone to depression and anxiety are more prone to anorexia nervosa. So would anti-depressants and/or anti-anxiety drugs reduce the incidence of anorexia?
This study is the first published in the medical literature to estimate how much liability for developing anorexia nervosa is due to genetics, and the first to find a statistically significant association between the prospective risk factor of neuroticism and later development of anorexia, said Dr. Cynthia M. Bulik, lead author of the study, published in the March issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
"What this study shows is that anorexia nervosa is moderately heritable and may be predicted by the presence of early neuroticism, which reflects proneness to depression and anxiety," Bulik said. "Fifty-six percent heritability – that’s a fairly large contribution of genes. The remaining liability is due to environmental factors."
Bulik is the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan distinguished professor of eating disorders in UNC’s School of Medicine and director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program at UNC Hospitals. She also is a professor of nutrition, a department housed in the schools of public health and medicine, and holds the only endowed professorship in eating disorders nationwide.
The reason she and her co-authors reached these conclusions where previous studies could not, Bulik said, is that their study was based on data obtained from screening a very large sample of twins. Their sample, from the Swedish Twin Registry, consisted of 31,406 individuals born between 1935 and 1958. None of the previous studies had samples nearly as large, Bulik said.
Twin studies continue to produce a wealth of scientific information about the human heredity.
The US National Institute for Mental Health says the death rate from anorexia nervosa is pretty high.
An estimated 0.5 to 3.7 percent of females suffer from anorexia nervosa in their lifetime.
The mortality rate among people with anorexia has been estimated at 0.56 percent per year, or approximately 5.6 percent per decade, which is about 12 times higher than the annual death rate due to all causes of death among females ages 15-24 in the general population.
But a March 2003 Mayo Clinic study found that the death rate from anorexia nervosa is no higher than among the general population.
ROCHESTER, Minn. — A long-term study of patients in Rochester, Minn., with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa found that their survival rates did not differ from the expected survival rates of others of the same age and sex.
The results, published in the March issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, add to the knowledge of anorexia nervosa and point to other areas that need greater study from researchers.
“Although our data suggest that overall mortality is not increased among community patients with anorexia nervosa in general, these findings should not lead to complacency in clinical practice because deaths do occur,” says L. Joseph Melton, III, M.D., Mayo Clinic epidemiologist and an author of the report.
One argument for the cause of the discrepancy is that other studies used anorexia nervosa sufferers who were sick enough to require hospitalization. Whereas a larger set of all anorexia nervosa sufferers as the Mayo Clinic used brings in people who have less severe cases.
The Mayo Clinic also has a public health information web page that claims anorexia does cause a high mortality rate.
Anorexia typically has numerous complications. At its most severe, it can be fatal. Anorexia has one of the higher deaths rates among all mental illnesses, hovering around 5 percent but perhaps even higher than that.
Perhaps some anorexia patients have such severe symptoms that they damage their bodies through malnutrition while other anorexia patients end up eating more like calorie restriction dieters and perhaps even gain some life expectancy as a result. Though that seems unlikely since the calorie restrictionists try hard to make sure they get enough vitamin
Resolved Question: Flexitarianism: Can you be a part-time vegetarian?
I found this article at http://www.newsweek.com/id/161559/page/1
I've added my thoughts and opinions into the article so when you see UPPERCASE words in (parenthesis), thats me talking.
Post your comments about the article
For the last 15 years, Dawn Jackson Blatner has been what's now called a "flexitarian" or "almost vegetarian." (CAN YOU SAY OXYMORON?) She eats lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, barbecued tempeh and veggie burgers with guacamole. But she sometimes indulges in a pork chop or her grandma's pot roast.
It might seem like being a vegetarian of convenience isn't particularly inspiring, but a growing number of experts and even some famous foodies are fans. They say that cutting back on meat, rather than abstaining completely, may be a practical compromise that benefits our bodies and our environment.
"It gives you the health benefits of a vegetarian diet without having to follow the strict rules," (WHY IS IT CONCIDERED STRICKED? YOU CAN EAT JUST BOUT EVERYTHING YOU WANT. EVER HEARD OF MEATLESS MEATS PPL!?!?!) says Blatner, a registered dietitian and author of "The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and Add Years to Your Life" (McGraw-Hill, October 2008). "We know that people live longer and live healthier when they eat vegetarian, but it's just too darn hard to do it 100 percent of the time."
Even gourmet food writers, used to nightly courses of filets and pates, are advocating the eat-less-meat movement. In January, Mark Bittman, author of "How to Cook Everything" (Wiley, 1998), is coming out with new book called "Food Matters," (Simon & Schuster) about how our diet affects global warming and "globesity" (global obesity). Bittman has been very critical of what he calls America's "meat guzzling" tendencies. "I am an advocate of what I like to think of as a much saner diet—a largely plant-based diet," he says. A meat-based diet is, he says, "not even close to sustainable." Last year, Bittman published "How to Cook Everything Vegetarian," (Wiley, 2007), though he is not a vegetarian himself.
Bittman notes that Americans eat about 200 pounds of meat, poultry and fish a year—twice as much as the global average (YUCK!). He argues that not only is a heavily vegetable diet healthier for us physically, but that it's also true that the industrial production and processing of grain-fed livestock consumes a huge amount energy and has a negative impact on the environment (NEGATIVE IMPACT!!!).
It's unclear how many people are official "flexitarian" converts, but nutritionists believe there are a growing number of people who are simply eating fewer meat entrees whether it's for health, or economic reasons or because there are more good meatless dishes on offer. Think how many Americans regularly eat peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, pasta, bean burritos and cheese pizzas as their main courses, says Blatner. "I do feel like that is a shocking thing, when you think about how much vegetarian food we eat without even trying." (THIS IS THE SAME GUY WHO SAID VEGETARIANISM WAS STRICT?!?!)
And while only 2 to 3 percent of Americans are traditional vegetarians, who shun anything that ever had a face, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group, vegetarian foods have become increasingly popular among non-vegetarians. "If you look around at every regular, mainstream grocery store, you have soy milk right next to regular milk, you have veggie burgers in the frozen section, and tubs of tofu sitting there in the produce section," says Blatner. She suggests that many of those who buy these products may be flextitarians and not even realize it. Even dedicated vegetarians say they are somewhat flexible. A 2003 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that two out of three vegetarians say they can't stick to a pure veggie diet all the time (DO YOU THINK THIS IS TRUE?).
Some vegetarian advocates hope that a movement that begins with eating less meat might lead to more people embracing a no-meat, no-fish and no-fowl lifestyle. Vegetarian Resource Group co-director Charles Stahler, calls it a "step in the right direction." It should also inspire even more restaurants to create veggie options, and more people to realize that it's "easy to be a vegetarian," he says. In fact, it already has become a bit easier for gourmet food lovers to find good meatless entrees. Last year a National Restaurant Association survey found that more than 50 percent of chefs rate vegetarian entries among their top 10 trendiest menu items (I THOUGHT THIS WAS INTERESTING).
Still, not everyone agrees that it's a great idea to be mostly vegetarian instead of going whole hog—so to speak. "Given the environmental, cruelty and health impact of a meat-based diet, going vegan is best, going vegetarian is good, and being a flexitarian is like smoking two packs of cigarettes instead of ten, beating one pig down the slaughter ramp instead of two, and pouring a p

Resolved Question: Can you become b12 deficient from blood loss?
I lost a good amount of blood from nose bleeds a while ago and I recently got a blood test to make sure everything I was alright. Well, the nurse called and said they want to have my blood retested in a month because a few things came back low. Total cholesterol and neutrophils were both low yet my hematocrit and hemoglobin readings were fine.
I also have been having some knee (more like bone) pain so I've been doing some reading and can relate to several of the symptons of b12 deficiency and came across these to research articles:
http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/reprint/78/1/109.pdf
http://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/publications.htm?seq_no_115=152624
Wiki also says that white blood cells (neutrophils) would be low in a b12 deficienct person...
Could my blood loss have led to b12 deficiency?

"Good Morning,
I'm a nutrition student at the University of Algarve, Portugal, and I'm working on a paper about the influences on children eating habits, and I am very interested in your paper, Establishing good dietary habits – capturing the minds of children.
However, I don't have any kind of signature, so I can't accede to the whole article. Could you please send me a copy of your article? I'd be very grateful.

Resolved Question: help moms!! first baby didnt thrive on breastmilk.. thought the second baby was doing great but now....?
well my first son took almost 4 weeks to regain his birth weight after a 6% loss after birth... his pediatrician recommended we supplement with formula after that, which lasted for about two weeks until he got thrush which tranferred to me and led to the eventual rejection of the breast since i was feeding him more often with those because of the pain. anyways, with that said, i was worried about breastfeeding our second child, hoping they would gain weight faster. she was born at 7 lbs 1 oz and lost 7.8% of her body weight and to my delight, had regained her birth weight by 9 days old! i was so proud, after the letdown of not being able to provide what was "natural" to my son. at her next weigh in, when she was 3 weeks old she was up to a whopping 8.36 lbs! (approx 8 lbs 5 oz), leading to further delight at the incredible job my body was doing and her love for eating. things were great, she eats one schedule and for a good amount of time with no latch issues. heck, she even started sleeping for 5 hrs at a time during the night at 4 weeks! (twice for 7 hours! those were sweet hours...) anyways, this week was another weigh in at 6 weeks. to my surprise - she weighed in at 8.68 lbs (approx. 8 lbs 10 oz), only 5 oz more than last time - she also had just eaten and was wearing one light article of clothing and a diaper - last time it had just been a diaper. now my red alarms are going off and im worried shes not gaining enough weight. she already gets the rare bottle of formula (2-3 bottles per week) which should have helped in chubbing her up.. she doesnt throw up very much either. she goes back when shes 8 1/2 weeks old for another weigh in just to be sure but my dr's only suggestion was that she was in between growth spurts... i feel like the same thing is happening all over again, just a little later in the game and i dont know what to do.. a huge part of me wants to breastfeed and to be the one that provides that nutrition to my little one for a while longer.. she looks so beautiful when shes nursing. but part of me wants to be sure shes healthy and growing!! my dr was concerned with 5 oz in 3 weeks and from what ive read, hes got a right to especially since she had just eaten (she usually eats 4 oz from the bottle, so im assuming its the same from the breast)..... any tips moms?? i just feel like theres no hope and almost no point since the same thing happened with my son and i completely lost the chance to breastfeed him after 6 weeks...

"Color Therapy." TherapyColor.com. 5 Oct. 2008 . This site was some what helpful because it explains step by step how the colors are affecting our mood, emotions and health. It also explains how certain colors would help with nutrition or give off more energy to the body. It gives examples of how bright colors can help you live longer by stimulating the tissues and organs in your body while increasing your hormones. In this article the author describes that there is no possible way of getting to much color therapy. There are charts listed below the article explaining the affects of certain colors and what may happen if you are over stimulated by a color. Also, in the first paragraph there are some tools listed that will help you to get the color therapy you’re looking for and depending on what color it is, what you will be affecting. My first source didn’t have as much detail in the processing of color therapy. This one by far has been the most useful sight in answering my question. This article was written by Ads by Google. It was intended for anyone looking for ways to maybe help with medical problems or maybe you’re having a bad day and want new ways to cheer yourself up.
McCasland, Lisa J. "Stimulate Your Baby with Bright Colors." Personal interview. 6 Oct. 2008. Ms. McCasland is the Child Development teacher here at the high school. She has a Bachelors Degree in science and she has studied children psychology for many years. In her interview we discussed how babies are proven to be more stimulated by brighter colors rather then the more pastel dull colors. The bland and soft colors put them to sleep. Studies have shown that childrens imaginations and learning process is actually stimulated by neon or brighter colors. The most attention catching colors to a baby’s eye is neon green, red, bright blue and black. Children are not only stimulated by seeing colors on a wall or on a toy but by what they wear. In research it was shown that plain cloths do little to activate the process of personality development. Childrens cloths need to be mixed of bright and dark colors along with logos and pictures. As you know colors around you affect how you feel and how you assert yourself. Decorating your babies’ nursery in certain colors can make a difference of how well your baby rests, sleeps, or even how much your baby eats. Red and orange can be used to increase your babies’ appetite. The color blue is the ideal color to promote sleep for over-active children, enhancing decision-making and communication. When painting your Childs nursery keep in mind that bright colors stimulate a babies senses, helping them focus and concentrate. Babies need stimulation of their senses as much as they need rest for their bodies. It is a theory that babies are born color blind. There have been tests that show if you show a baby repeatedly a shade of blue then another shade of blue they will treat it the same and get bored. But if you show them a green they will perk up and start looking again. This shows that babies are aware that blue falls into the same category of color. When colors were represented in pairs babies tend to look for the longest amount of time at blue, red, purple, and orange, and the shortest amount of time at brown. There was some questioning that the stimulation of a child mind could be based on some cultural differences. When an experiment was done on 24 Chinese and 24 English children both cultures showed similar likes and preferred highly saturated, richer colors then desaturated colors of the same hue.
Meola, Kalyan V. "The Psychology of Color." HOHONU. 2005. The University of Hawaii. 1 Oct. 2008 . This article has many explanations on color psychology containing the effect it has on humans and their emotions. However this article does not explain the importance of colors and the effects it has on children during their years of development. This article focuses both on the effect of light then the effect of colors. It explains how people who suffer from SAD are deprived of sun for six months at a time, and some side effects of this disorder. Sir Isaac Newton was the man who proved that light could be broken into a range of color. Newton was the one who chose the seven hues. This article explains why certain things in life are a certain color. Like a plant is green because of photosynthesis and the stop sign is red because the color red has an exciting effect on the nervous system. Listed in the article is a graph stating the positive and negative associations with color, and the impressions it has with humans. It discuses how our impressions of colors are different compared to other cultures. For example in China white is for mo

I AM REALLY WORRIED AND NEED HELP ON THIS. Would this have caused any harm????
Resolved Question: Would you please help me in this Nutrition Survey?
Read the article on the following website:
http://www.cspinet.org/nah/12_00/barexam.html
Select “View Ratings Chart” on the left side of the screen.
1. Select a bar you have tried, and list the kcals, total fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates and fiber. If you consume bars not on the list, find this information on your bar’s wrapper. If you do not consume any energy bars, select any from this website and list the above mentioned information.
2. Create two snacks, made from whole foods, that would be reasonably close in kcals and the nutrients listed in question 1. Make sure to list each snack’s kcals, total fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates and fiber.
3. Why might the two snacks made of whole foods be better choices than the energy bars?
Resolved Question: Looking for Constructive Criticism-- is this school newspaper article interesting?
Yes, I added sarcastic flavor.
What You Might Have Not Known About November
There are several things that we do know about this particular month; for example, we know of the change in weather, as well as the expectations of seeing at least two fifths of the females in school wearing those seasonal UGG boots. We know that at least one satirical depiction of a Turkey will be seen, trying to escape being eaten for dinner (and, we note each time how retired and unamusing the joke is). In other words, there’s a million and one clichés and associations with the month of November, whether they be personal or externally apparent; however, there may just be a few things that you didn’t know about this time of year.
November’s name descended from the Latin word “novem”, meaning “nine”. It was considered the ninth month of the year, according to the Roman calendar, until a long winter broke a protracted chunk of time into two separate months, thus creating January and February. One may wonder why the name was never changed after twelve months, and the answer is unknown; perhaps to avoid confusion, or perhaps out of sheer laziness, like the lack of the United State’s conversion from customary back to metric measurement-- darn our nonconformity.
Thanksgiving did not derive from a unified dinner between the Native Americans and English settlers, though a dinner did take place to celebrate the harvest at one point. In a nutshell, the Native Americans taught the new settlers how to farm and hunt, but the two parties broke out into a conflict. The first settlers went after Wampanoag (an Indian tribe), armed with weapons, and slaughtered most of the people in it. As gruesome as it sounds, it only gets worse; the white men settled and held the skull of the fallen chief on a pike above their village for approximately twenty-five years following the attack-- the ultimate “triumph”, as they saw it.
Additionally, amongst other stereotypes that we were taught, the food eaten on Thanksgiving is not at all similar to what we eat today. The original meal consisted mostly of deer meat, and lacked vegetables, sweets, and fruit. There was no cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, or even sugar (the supplies brought on the Mayflower had dwindled by the time this celebration had taken place), but instead mashed grain, seafood, meat, and liverwort. People did not have many varieties of food to eat, consuming whatever was closest to them. And, to top it all off, it wasn’t exactly the most unifying of events, either, for those of higher importance and class were allowed to eat the ‘better’ foods and interact with each other, whereas the commoners of both the Wampanoag and the settlers were expected to appreciate whatever they were given and did not have as much liberty to socialize.
Warm and fuzzy our common associations with Thanksgiving may be, a majority of them are theatrical myths powdered with ideals-- like anything we were told in the first or second grade. For example, the first Thanksgiving was not in 1621. Thanksgiving had existed for generations and generations prior to this year in England, its tradition being a trip to church and a special prayer of thanks to be given to God, and not a feast. The holiday as it was in 1621 with Native Americans was not celebrated annually after its occurrence, either, but was instead reinstated as an official American Holiday just short of two hundred and fifty years later. Also, the pilgrims were planning on arriving at our New Yorker shoreline rather than Virginia (at the time, that area was also called Virginia), and, just as frosting on the cake, pilgrims did not wear buckles on every bleak part of their body, either; the metal buckle was not invented until the early 1700’s.
Steering away from Thanksgiving, as entertaining as divulging common knowledge of it is, there are also many other facts about November that go unknown to a vast majority. A few other notable events have happened in the past during this 30-day stretch, including the assassination of John F. Kennedy (Nov. 22, 1963), Veteran’s day (Nov. 11), and, most importantly of all, Sesame Street day (Nov. 10). November is also dubbed National Aviation Month, National Child Safety and Protection Month, Good Nutrition Month, International Drum Month, Latin American Month, National Adoption Month, National Model Railroad Month, National Epilepsy Month, and a dozen other useless things in commemoration of practices and ideas that happen everyday, anyway, regardless of whatever month it is.
Closing this wonderful and insightful article on the fascinating entities that we rarely think about on a 365-day basis, may Berlin High School have a great month of November, and take no offense to the comment about UGG boots.

Resolved Question: What topic should i pick for my major research report for food/nutrition course?
Basically i have a major report (ISU)(independant study unit) its for the course food and nutrition in grade 12. I need a topic with tons of articles sources and information if someone can pick top 3 from the following that would be ever so nice.
Food allergies, calcium osteoporosis, effect of caffeine, lactose intolerance, food for athletes, women & iron deficiency, malnutrition & elderly, colon cancer & fibre intakes, childhood obesity, folic acid& neural tube defects, food additives, vegetarian diets (concern for protein), artificial sweeteners effects, diabetes, anti-cancer food, soy beans-food for future, Trans fats, cholesterol & arteriosclerosis, sugar: (dental, hyperactivity, obesity, diabetes) , low car diets vs. Canada’s food guide, dietary supplements (safe?, new? Needed?), digestive disorders, hypo glycaemia, high protein diets (effect on kidney), organic foods (government regulations, terminology, new technology), fast food, Eating disorders: anorexia, Bulimia, Compulsive eating (choose 1), Fad diets (South beach diet, Atkins etc Choose 1), Serving sizes (have they changed?, effects on weight, attitude, learning ability), Tap water vs. bottled water, Holistic medicine, herbal supplements, Red wine (benefits/ heart health), Salt (hyper tensions & risk to health), chocolate (flavorids, healthful properties).
Resolved Question: Nutrition Research Paper- Need Topic?
As mentioned in the syllabus, throughout the semester you will be working on a paper with a topic of your choice.
The first step is to think of a question about a health related issue for example a nutritional deficiency, food allergy, medical condition, or disease that you have always been curious about but never got a chance to research. Remember the more interest you have in your topic the less painful working on your assignment.
After you come up with your question, think of an interesting Title for your paper then start searching the literature, make sure your main source of information comes from Journals, reviewed articles, and books. If you are not sure how to start you can always go to the library and ask for help.
*** this is what the teacher gave us as a starting point. I need serious help this is due in a couple of days and i am not coming up with plausible ideas that would make a 8-10pg paper
Resolved Question: Are most breakfast cereals dangerous junk food or healthy nutrition?
A Consumers International study has recently found that breakfast cereals sold in Malaysia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand, and the Philippines contain up to 25g of sugar per 100g of cereal. This study has also found that many cereals are "laden with fat and salt". Which can lead to obesity and hypertension.

This study makes me wonder if the consumption of such cereals is a big cause of pediatric obesity in USA and Europe too?
Resolved Question: Any cat experts that could help me with nutrition/care? ?
INFO.
Name: Lucy
Age: 9 weeks old
Gender: Female
Updates: Dewormed/checkup before she came home. Will be spayed and given shots this Saturday.
INTRO.
Let me start by saying that I have nothing against cats. I've never liked cats, I have no knowledge for them, and I take to dogs more. Recently my sister brought home a wild kitten without my knowledge. Note: when I say wild I mean born outdoors with the lack of human interaction. A woman was rescuing kittens nearby her home and took them to the pound. Unfortunately, the manager said that there was just an overabundance of them. If she were to give them up they would have to be humanely euthanaized immediately. However she decided to try and convince customers in Pet Value if they wanted to adopt them. It just so happens my sister was walking by at the time. At first I was completely against the cat, firmly saying "It's not my cat it's yours. Do whatever you want." My sister ( 21 ) desperately wanted it and as long as she took full responsibility I felt content. I am an animal lover after all and if it meant saving a life then sure, why not?
With no surprise my sister's "Responsibility" slowly diminished. I believe she's fed the cat twice her entire life and enjoys buying the accessories more than actually having ownership. PLEASE don't be offended by my sister she's one of those artificial, materialistic, divas. She reminds me of Paris Hilton, mind it's not easy putting up with it. And it disgusts me when people desire baby animals and in a day grow bored of them or find them to be chores. Please don't say anything mean about my sister she does mean well. Now as said before I dislike cats but I'm not that cruel. Despite my sister's lack of ownership and the fact that I couldn't just give it to the pound I've decided to care for her. I feed Lucy 1/2 cup 3 times a day no later than 6:00pm ( I plan to ask the vet as of how much and how many times I should really feed her ). I play with her constantly (at least a minimum of 4 hours a day), clean the liter box everyday, and change the liter once a week every Sunday. Overtime my dislike for cats have grown to a fondness. I honestly can say that I have developed an emotional attachment with Lucy.
Breakdown Mode
( Nutrition )
The vet that my sister took Lucy recommended dry food. My sister even purchased a book from Petco, Kitten Guide for the best start in life by Science Diet, that recommended the same thing ( Go figure....). However, I'm a research freak and decided to surf the web for more additional information. Eventually, I've stumbled onto Lia A. Pierson's site: http://www.catinfo.org/ I prefer gathering my information from books considering they're a lot more accurate about facts. Information on the web, especially google searched engines, are more of opinions than facts. When I've read Lia's articles she made a lot of obvious reasons why dry food had poor quality. I even made the poor choice of going to Walmart and purchasing the Goodlife Recipe: Chicken and brown rice. At the time I suppose my sister and I were thinking more of a human's diet than a cat's diet. I was very upset when I have found out what I'm really doing to my cat. Possibly giving her kidney stones, urinary tract infections, diabetes, and even obesity. Not too mention really bad gas due to the horrible cat food.
These were just some of the ingredients I've found from the Goodlife Recipe: "GROUND CORN, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT meal, CORN gluten meal, Animal Fat, Chicken, WHOLE GRAIN, BROWN RICE, Natural Poultry flavor, DRIED PEAS, RICE, WHEAT FLOUR, BREWERS DRIED YEAST" - (My jaw dropped)
Immediately I took the initiative today to correct this problem. I've exchanged an unopened bag of the cat food she's been eating to get wet food instead. However, I didn't have a recite so I couldn't make a trip to Petco. Instead I was given store credit and this way I had plenty of time to read the labels. This is where my breakdown began. With the little knowledge I knew about cats I made an effort to try and find the best food ( if possible ) other than Goodlife. I ran into a lot of ingredients that consists of corn and rice. If one had corn or such vegetation listed as the first three ingredients I immediately put it down. One by one each food had such poor quality. I was extremely upset and I even started to cry a little. I was just so frustrated about being such a bad cat owner and slowly killing Lucy with poor nutrition. Not too mention the questionable glances people gave me seeing an 18 year old girl cry as she read the back of cat foods. It was humiliating now that I think of it but at the time I was really concerned and unsure if I was making the right choices.
I literally took 2 hours comparing and contrasting wet foods when it finally came down to Friskies or Iams. Iams sounded good until I felt there was more quantity of meat by-products than of muscle meats. One of the ingredients was also rice brewer and that
Resolved Question: What do you think of Doctor Mercola?
If you have been reading about his health articles, you may have learned that cell phones, microwaving food and night lights increase your risk of cancer, your cookware, toys and everything you use everyday contains hidden toxic chemicals, you must avoid sugar and stress at all costs, and identifies your nutrition type to avoid diabetes.
Yes, when I read his articles, it generates a lot of stress in me, since it makes me feel I am making a lot of mistakes with my health. After a year and a half, I had enough, and I want to do the things I want to do.
So, for those of you who had read at least some of Mercola's information, please give your opinions regarding his 'creepy' health tips.
Resolved Question: What is the Best Way To Advertise Myself as a Writer of Blogs and Websites?
I know there are many technically savvy people who have no problem creating a beautifully designed website, however they lack the skills to filll the content. The same with bloggers. I have the opposite problem. I'm an excellent writer but without the technical abilities. I don't have any experience with HTML, feeds, etc. I can write about the humanities, social sciences, health, nutrition and animal care. Where can I offer my writing services and get paid by the word or the article?
I guess I haven't explained myself clearly. I would like to get contracts with webmasters to write articles that fit in with their website, rather than my writing something and then trying to find a site where it might fit.
To the last writer. I'm assuming that would be the same thing as "clips" or formerly published work. I've been a freelance writer for newspapers, so I'm assuming that's what you mean.

Resolved Question: What do you think about feeding BARF diet?
When I saw articles about dry dog food (what it contents, etc.) and kibble food...I considered to change my dog's nutrition.
Of course, they're carnivores...I mean I started with raw chicken meat and he likes it and I think, that major part of their nutrition should be meat.
I try to choose him a good dry food (Hill's) with no preservatives, but I'm still not satisfied with it.
So will be better to combine this dry food, raw meat, barf diet?
Thank YOU for all advices and suggestions,I'm just a beginner.
Resolved Question: New Kitten (~4-5 weeks) owner looking for nutrition guidelines and rearing advice
I live in Bulgaria and a stray mackerel tabby followed me home for over an hour. I've had him since Friday and he seems healthy, but it is a pain getting him to eat consistently. I have to try different mixtures of hot water (the food is usually cold from the fridge), cow's milk blend, soft food, and kibbles (trying to wean her onto it.)
I'm unsure how much kittens are supposed to eat, but I have a big can of soft food and I bought hard food for her today. She has teeth and I know that she can eat the kibbles, but she is just so picky. Also, the first couple days I gave her a mix of cow's milk and egg yolk because it's all they have in town. There is no such thing as animal shelters here and my "veterinary store" just sells basic supplies.
My question is: is it OK to feed a 4-5 week old kitten only soft/hard cat food? I know kittens need more so I crush a cat vitamin in there with her food, but should I keep giving her the milk blend to supplement her early diet and as a replacement for mom's milk?
I don't want her to be malnourished and she eats a few times a day, but when she does it's not a whole lot. When she is hungry, she meows, and I have to guide her to the dish b/c she waits for me. I know I'm not supposed to reinforce a needy meowing habit, but she's just a kitten!!
Also, she hasn't even touched her water bowl! I know for a fact it's clean, but she's been eating the milk/soft/hard mix regularly and she even pooped normally (it was solid and dark brown.) If she was thirsty, she knows where the dish is. Since she poops normally, eats, has a ton of energy, naps, and pretty much seems healthy, should I worry about the water issue?
Lastly, I don't want her to grow up lonely or socially inept and I keep reading articles about how 2 kittens are better than one. Unfortunately, I'm leaving Bulgaria after a year and I don't want to adopt another kitten only to give it away and separate it from the other cat, that's just cruel (especially leaving her in this country...)
Is it really that important for my kitten to have a companion growing up? I try to play with her as often as possible and don't leave her alone for more than a few hours a day, and I try to time it so it's when she's napping. I'm going to look in nearby towns for toys and hopefully an accredited veterinarian....but a concept like "animal doctor" here is often an oxymoron unless you're talking about taking care of basic farm animals to exploit them as food. Welcome to the majority of Bulgaria.
I'm going to take her to a vet that actually know what he's talking about. In Bulgaria stray animals are kicked, beaten, starved, run over, and most of all neglected and unloved. The road outside my house is a cemetery for kittens and I've seen infants squashed into the pavement with their faces screaming, so you can see why I wanted to adopt him.
I think that's it. Thanks everyone!!! His name is Tabs and I hope he'll become like a brother/son someday. There's a ton to learn, but I want to raise him right and make sure he's healthy.

Resolved Question: How would i write my prewrite with this essay i wrote 5 minutes ago???
Vegetarianism is a diet that is being adopted by a lot of people since it equated to a healthy lifestyle. There are many claims that a vegetarian diet does not provide all the nutritional needs of a person especially the protein needs. Animals are classified as carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Carnivores are known as the meat-eaters and they have specialized teeth called canine that could tear through meat. Herbivores eat only plant matter and they have flat teeth that they use to grind plant matter. Omnivores on the other hand eat both meat and plant matter. Humans are classified as omnivores; evidence of this is that humans have both sets of specialized teeth.
Vegetarianism is classified into different classes. Ovo-vegetarians do not include meat in their diets but they approve of eggs while lacto-ovo-vegetarians approve of milk and other dairy products and egg. Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy products but disapprove of eggs while vegans follow strict diets that include only food form plant sources. They strictly follow a no-meat diet (Vegetarianism).
There are a number of reasons why people choose to be vegetarians. Many adopt this diet because of health concerns but a vegetarian diet must be monitored since some vegetarians diets may prove to be unhealthy such that the person may lack a sufficient intake of some key nutrients and vitamins such as Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, calcium, protein, iron and zinc (Vegetarian Diets).
It is recommended that vegetarian diets include a large variety of foods and they must also make sure that their calorie intake is sufficient to meet their energy needs. Intake of sweet and fatty food should be kept to a minimum since these foods have low nutrients but have a high calorie content. Whole or unrefined grains ars recommended. Fortified or enriched cereals are also a good main diet. Fruits and vegetables must always be included since they are good sources of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. If a vegetarian approves of dairy products, he must choose dairy products that have no fat or have less amount of fat. Eggs are however high in cholesterol and egg intake must be monitored. It is however a good source of protein (Vegetarian Diets).
In the book Diet for A Small Planet, Frances Moore Lappe indicates how the required intake of protein can be satisfied with a vegetarian diet. He suggests a breakfast that includes one cup of cooked oatmeal that has 5.4 grams of protein and 0.5 ounces of sunflower seeds that have 3.5 grams of protein. A lunch of 2 tablespoons of peanut butter with 7.8 grams of protein and 2 slices of whole wheat bread for 4.8 grams. For dinner, he recommends a cup of cooked brown rice for 3.8 grams and 1.3 cups of broccoli for 6.2 grams and a cup of cooked beans for 15.6 grams of protein. He also recommends other minor sources of protein such as mushroom, carrots, apples, raisins, fruit juice, honey and oil (White and Frank).
Vegetarianism may however not be a healthy diet for children. According to Professor Lindsay Allen, director of the US Agricultural Research Service’s Western Human Nutrition Research Centre at the University of California at Davis, not giving children meat during the crucial stages of development is unhealthy for them. Allen said that a no-meat diet for children causes permanent damage since meat provides Vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, Vitamin A and iron, which are crucial for growth and development. She explained that adults adopting vegetarian diets raise ethical and health concerns since adults have already passed the crucial stages of development. Also, adults can replace certain vitamin and mineral intake with supplements. Allen said that giving children supplemental nutrition is too risky (Roche, 2005).
In her study with 544 seven-year old children in Kenya over a two-year period, those children that ate meat had 80 percent increase in muscle mass and those that had milk had a 40 percent increase. They also showed higher mental development as they yielded higher test results (Roche, 2005).
Vegetarian diets have also become an issue for vegetarians since they have higher nutritional requirements. Such a diet may be healthy for pregnant weapon but they must consult a dietitian to ensure that they are getting all the nutrients that they need. In one study, German researchers discovered that pregnant women following a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet showed low Vitamin B12 levels even if they ate eggs and milk. Vitamin B12 is important for a pregnant woman since it keeps her healthy during a pregnancy as well as keeping the developing child from developing spinal malformations (McVeigh, 2005). It may be noted that B12 is only found in meat sources. Scientists have also discovered that even people not following a vegetarian diet showed a deficiency of Vitamin B12 (Kirchheimer, 2003).
Vegetarianism may be a healthy diet since it may reduce the potential of developing certain illnesses. More and more people are adopting this diet. However, extra-precaution must be taken since monitoring the diet of a vegetarian is crucial so that it may be ensured that he/she is receiving a sufficient intake of nutrients. This is extremely important especially for young people and pregnant women who are vegetarians. A vegetarian diet may be a diet as healthy as a diet containing milk but for it to be a healthy planning, it must be planned and consideration must be taken so that the person will have a sufficient intake of necessary vitamins and minerals.

Resolved Question: Stop being so Strict?
Ok so i was always known as the super skinny girl before i started my exercise and health food craze. I used to eat WHATEVER i wanted in WHATEVER amount. Now I run every day for 30-45 min always doing at least 15 min of HIIT running somewhere in there. Then i eat 4 meals a day and i'm not going to go into the all the meals that i eat but i can tell you i've read every article on healthy food for your body and i eat extremely healthy looking at every nutrition fact. so now i have very nice abs and i'm actually underweight but not intentionally it just happened when i started to eat very healthy but what i wanted to know was that if i let up a little maybe ran 4 days a week and have my sweet snacks again in moderation (which i absolutely don't do now), when the weight does start to come back will i be fatter than before or will i go back to the way i was. I'm just asking bc i've read places where ppl have said if you stop your diet you just end up getting fatter than b4. So any answers??
Voting Question: Weightlifting program for a high school runner?
Hi. I am entering high school as a freshman. I am one of the top cross country runners at my school. I was reading an article on power principles. Here's the link:
http://www.muscleandfitness.com/training/151?page=1
I run about 40-50 miles a week and I think that I have a ectomorphic physique, which means I can't gain a lot of weight quickly. I want to implement these power workouts into my schedule. I already got my nutrition and running workouts solved, but I do not have my strength training workout. I know that if I don't consume more calories than I burn I can't possibly gain too much bulk to affect my running performance. The only problem is that I am afraid that it will affect my performance. I want to be able to win the cross country national championships when I enter my senior year at high school. Can I follow this program? Please be honest as I have been trying to find a program for the last 13 months. Thank you for your time and advice.
Voting Question: why cant i get stronger part2?
Ok, for some of you who answered my question thank you... but however most of you obviously arnt good at reading or something, i stated its not my nutrition and how much protien i get, ive stated ive change my routine there fore yes i do high reps too... and i have a 8% bodyfat and very toned, so me being fat has nothing to do with it... however the only thing that i agree with is the plateau, even though i should not be there yet because im young, 165 and should be benching 300lbs no problem but im not, any other suggestions on how to get out of the plateau? (please dont answer change your workout routine, eat more, eat more protien, add carbs, do more or less reps... please tell me something i dont know.. ive been working out for 7 years, reading articles and all sorts, i know alot about wieght lifting and bodybuilding but obviously not enough to get out of this forever lasting plateau, so if you got anything else let me know) thanks again.. i still apreciate all answers

Voting Question: Attention All FEMALE TEENAGE DIETERS!?
Hopefully, if you're reading this, you are a girl, an adolescent, and on a diet or thinking about going on a diet. If you're not, I think you may be pretty bored reading this.
So, girlies. Thought about going on that 3-day diet? Maybe you'll just reduce your calorie intake to 700 a day, and up the exercise. Want to go on that new diet everyone says works? Well, let me tell you something, honey. IT DOESN'T.
Achieving healthy, slow weight loss is about a complete lifestyle turnaround. No fad diet or starvation period is going to help you lose weight for good. To lose weight, follow this simple equation. Calories out > Calories in. See? Easy.
Your body burns about 1300 calories just existing. Add to that the "daily grind," and you've probably already burned around 1600 calories. Check out http://www.sparkteens.com for articles, nutrition plans, and tips for HEALTHY weight loss.
Yes or no: Would you like to lose weight and keep it off?
Note: This is not an advertisement for SparkTeens, and I am in no way getting paid for this. I'm just someone who's getting a little tired of people in the "Diet and Fitness" section of Y!A asking for absolution eating 500 calories a day.
If SparkTeens is not the right program for you, I still hold that you should lose weight the healthy way, as opposed to starving yourself just so you can either develop an eating disorder or gain all the weight back later.
Resolved Question: Vitamin supplements to prevent premature graying?
I'm 20 & seen many sites & articles claiming to put an end to graying, but, nothing really works.Though there r many ways to provide nutrition to those hollow locks, time plays a hurdle to do those things.I've also developed dandruff because my schedule permits me to have a hair wash only once a week due to which the dandruff increases with every passing week.
Plz suggest some vitamin supplements or combinations or some hair gels that wudnt giv an oily look & are effective to stop graying.I'll like to know anything little that you know that wud if not completely but to some extent help me to get rid of this problem.
THANX IN ADVANCE!
