Open Question: Diet to gain mass as a hardgainer?
Hey I'm 18yr old, 5'9 and 120lbs. Last year i was 5'8 and nearly 100lbs when i decided to hit the gym, I did that for 6 months and finally reached 125lbs. I got a bit lazy and didn't work out again until last month. I maintained most of the gains i got in the year previous. Now that im back my goal is to reach 130 in a few months. The workouts I remember, i add weight every 3-4 workout days and I try each time to work out with intensity.
My only concern is and the reason Im asking this question is, I think my diet might be a major factor keeping me from gaining mass. My diet right now is random mostly, eatting this and that, healthy stuff but I dont think its really doing much for me since my metabolism in insane.
My favorite meats are pork and steak, I eat lots of vegies but most of my diet is mostly carbs. Can you help me with ratios of food groups + food ideas to help me gain weight?
Tom- How long did it take until you started seeing results?

Voting Question: How do I get my ideal body by gaining weight/muscle and getting seriously toned, please help?
For a few months now, I've desired a more muscular, curvy body. I'm very naturally thin - 100 pounds - with almost no muscle mass it seems. I was getting more toned in the summer but school really threw my workout schedule off, and I've lost all results I gained except a little in my arms.
But now I really want to get in shape, and there's a lot I want to do to my body. Ideally, I would like a body like Britney Spears when she performed Slave 4 U at the 2001 VMA's.
http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2007/parties/082907_spears_400x400.jpg
Genetically my stomach is curvier though (her's is a bit boyish there), and I'd like to retain that. However, other than that, I think her body is perfect.
I realize that it's going to take a lot for me to get this body, though. I need to gain at least ten or fifteen pounds, I'd think. But I don't know how to obtain it because wouldn't I want to gain it all in muscle mass if I want to be toned? But I don't know if that's possible. How do I gain weight while working out, wouldn't I just burn the weight off?
And more important, how do I gain muscle? I used to lift weights, and saw some small results with that. But I want to look REALLY toned like Britney, so I want to see some major results.
Your help is REALLY appreciated, please be as detailed as possible with diet/water/exercises and everything.
THANK YOU :)
By the way, I'm 5'5" if that factors into how much weight I should gain, etc. How much weight should I gain to look like Britney in that photo?

I am not out of shape but I need to loose some fat and build muscle and gain healthy weight (I know who doesn't) . I am about 5'8'' and 135lbs. I recently bought a bar (I think it's about 15lbs) and some weight plates (two 10lbs and two 5lbs). I would like to build some upper body muscle but I don't know what workouts I should be doing or how many reps and sets. I am planning on lifting Monday, Wednesday, Friday and running on Tuesday, Thursday and I will be doing ab workouts everyday. Is this a good plan? I also have a server motivation problem with working out I have started and stopped so many routines I lost count. A big motivation problem I have is with the running I am a really good runner but by my house it is way to hilly and the weather here sucks. Going to a track is way too far away and a treadmill is too expensive. Are there any other exercises I can do to get the same results as running? Any suggestion on how to keep me motivated to workout so I can stay on my routine? I know a big factor in working out is diet so what should I be eating and drinking to ensure success? Any help is appreciated thanks!

Voting Question: Tips on healthy eating??????
Hey people, I'm about to ask a very long question, summarizing about my life and problems, so please bear with me.First I'll start off , I'm Ali (not real name) and i am 13 years old, i am about 5 foot 4 and a half and weigh 106, i used to weigh 116 but lost some over the summer. Unfortunately the unhealthy way.
I'll start from the beginning, I read how eating saturated/trans fats are fats that may accelerate tumor cells (cancer) growth, i also read how it may increase your risk for stroke, heart attack, and Heart disease. I got terrified, i told my mother and she told me to stop freaking out, but the problem is that all my life she cooked high fat foods, always fried, and i ate tons of cookies, cakes and unhealthy stuff. So i decided to go healthy, i tried but then it lead to me eating little and then i would binge on pizza, cereal, a lot of food, too much, way too much. The worst problem was that the past 3 years i just sat in from of the TV and computer all day, other than school, im surprised im at a healthy weight. So i continued to heat healthier and end up binging in the thing i was scared of, food, food that was advertised, food that so many people eat a day and never get sick , food i hated yet loved at the same time-bitter sweet. This continued on , and i started exercise, 20 min each day on my exercise bike but i got bored, so after about a month of so i stopped. The past time, just lately i ate normally, eating healthyish but binging sometiems on too much cereal(the whole grain kind though) instead of excersice i just stayed moving, wrestling with my brother, helping with dinner cleaning my room, ect. Unfortunatly i also went on numerous crash diets, which lead to the binges, then i would purge some, i did this for a while, so today i ate all healthy
breakfast wrap with cheese , chicken, red peppers, (lean chicken , low fat cheese, whole grain tortilla)
lunch grilled cheese sandwhich on rye bread, with low fat cheese, and broccolie, and 1 cup of OJ(natural)
carrot and NO FAT yogurt for snack
then the binge:
cereal in handfuls(whole grain though, and "crisp rice")
i ate all my parents pizza crusts and kept sneacking bites of actual pizza, i ate 1 more no fat yogurt, i ate some crackers, and drank chocolate milk..i ate a crton of raspberries, and a carton of blueberries
so as you can see my diet is strange, so very unhealthy, Now im scared that i migt develop cancer, i know that like 40 year olds eat WAAAAAY worse than me and stuff, and live, but i am so ready for a change. Tomorrow i start, keeping active and eating a lot of low fat foods, and fruits and veggies.ALl my friends dont care about their health and eat way worse than me
i read that if you eat super healthy cancer that may delelop or already is may stop and ie if you starve it(no sugar) and eat a lot of cancer killing foods..
i already did beofre kinda, and i convinced my mom to cook with olive oil from now on
so:
1.Do you think i may have started to develop cancer at 13, (and i havent eating THAT bad, before just now i have)
2. If i eat healthy, excersise and try hard, will my risk go down? If i develpoed some already will it stop?
3. Ant tips on eating well, and excersising
4. ther is no cancer history sa i know ffor my family is this a lwer risk for ,me?
5.I got my HPV shot, and my parents smoke and i smeel their smoke sometimes..what about those factors?
6. i live in a building adn ther are fumes from renovaters above us, and i stay home alot what about that?
7. So tell me everything, if you have tips and a lost on cancer killing food please tell them
but my main question is: DO you think that if i have developed cacner in me and it is growing, and i start will it die, will i be okay?? IS IT TOO LATE FOR ME TO CHANGE??WILL I BE HEALTHY?
thanks alot
1 more thing i eat aspartame in gum , is this linked to cancer
some things that come and go in me are: seeing sars i saw these for a month before and my doc. said if tehres no link to anything ill be fine, after i ate healthier and stayed more active they went away, i sometimes get a werid pain in the bakck of my head, my doc said if it comes and goes and isnt chronic i shouldnt worry
so i guiess im healthy, but i ant to be healthier. phyicaly im fine, im not fat, slim, could lose a little weight, i look pale lately becasue of my unbalanced meal, when i wake up i feel groggy and confused and weird, this happens to me everyweek wend because i go to bed late and wake up late and my sleep gets disruppted..what about that?
and do disposable water bottles give you cancer??

Voting Question: Extreme Constipation?
For the past year or so now, i have been terrible with constipation and passing urine. It started when i was dating my ex girlfriend, i got nervous going to the toilet and stressed out, i was getting bad headaches and a terrible feeling when i was around her. I was with her for 5 months, i knew deep down i didn't love her in the way that i did so i ended it with her, i couldn't handle the relationship any longer. During the latter part of the relationship i was on depression tablets and getting extremely constipated as well. I was miserable and felt like dying, it was just funny the way it all seemed to happen at once that i felt so down but my mum died when i was 13 and never really got over that and my aunt died earlier this year with cancer as well. I think the stress all got to me and has made me feel really shit the past year, i find it tough to urinate at times after drinking aloud and constipated after eating a meal. My diet has always been good and consisted of the right foods vegetables and fibers, waters fruits salads and the occasional take outs. The only other time i was constipated bad was when i ate a big role at school around 3 years ago now, i was bad for a couple of months, but this time i know and feel its different. Some of the problems that i am getting is pains and numbness in my legs, lost of feeling in my hands and arms, pains in my chest, numbness and loss of feeling in my bum when sitting, irritable also moving around to be comfortable, pressure on my lower back, pains in my sides and stomach, and bowels, rumbling sensations all the time making noises. I didn't feel satisfied when i go to the toilet after drinking alot of fluids because very little urine comes out and usually is yellow. Also when i go for a poo it is a small stool and very hard too and some times can be four to five days to go when a small stool comes out. It just makes me wonder where all the shit is its inside me. I have tried a variety of laxatives and medication too like
fibogel
movicol
senokot
enemas
dulculax
lactose
a special one from the hospital in a big sachet
I am also finding now my body has become less tense and wobbly, like my muscle not much before i had has gone very weak. I have to push immensley at times for a stool and push to wee as well. I have been to my local gp and 2 local hospitals over the past year on over 10 occasions. I have had xrays which showed me extremely constipated and the best the can do each time is send me home and take some laxatives. All laxatives do is give you more pain and not resolve the problem just makes you do diarria shits not normal regular stools. I used to go every day a couple of times a day and felt cleared out when i went. I also went for pisses that lasted over 30 secs instead now they are dribbles which may only last for 10 secs. I know myself my body is not right and wondering what is the best course of action for now. I sleep more then i used to and didnt get as much exercise, but never really did before but felt more healthier then i do now, i know that my mind could be a big factor in all this but, stress too could be as well. I know a girl who has a similar problem to what i had and had to see a specialist in dublin and have an operation because it was going on for three years. My biggest concern is i didnt want to die and want to feel normal by doing regular shits every day and feel satisfied doing that while pissing for longer then 30 secs. I cant really do much at the moment to sort my problem out because o have a broken leg. I decided one night to go and play soccer to get some exercises and see if that would help my problem, it didn't do much good at all. I know why my leg broke because my body is not working right and my bones are alot weaker. I seem to be complaining in this yahoo question alot, i am sorry for that but just want to feel right in myself. Last october i felt bad and was in hospital for 4 days and that resolved the issue for a month or so. But since then have felt bad and look pail the whole time. I think my problem is more serious then doctors think that's why in a week or so i plan to send a letter of to a specialist in dublin to see if he can help. The doctors in my town didnt give a shit and want to fob you off and i even asked for a catheter because i was finding it tough to pee at times but they said no to that, i though it would help to relieve the constant pain i am in. The woman i know says shes alot better after the operation so i feel that i must go and do the same as she did and see a specialist to solve this problem once and for all.
My names Liam all advice is greatly appreciated.

Resolved Question: How can a 16 year old teenager find success in the gym?
I am 16 years old and still in school. I am about to start at a gym tomorrow. My goal would be to lose body fat and gain muscle. I am a bit, or should I say very, unaware of the secrets that build a good physique. I am a bit overweight, always have been, but I feel like it is time for a change. I already have a routine in mind for my workouts, but what concerns me the most is the nutritional factor. I've tried researching some stuff on proper diet, but it all seems so confusing. I understand that protein is important, but I'm still pretty confused on all the rest. Being a teen and all, I have very little understanding of what foods to choose. I also understood that I have to include 5 to 6 small meals in my diet, but how can I make that happen while I'm at school? can anybody help??
Resolved Question: Heart Issues--could be serious?
I would like to say, I've been on birth control for about 4-5 months now with Alesse. At the beginning, i had.. almost all the symptoms that I should've stopped taking the pills. But, after a month it went away. And now. I don't know if it's on the birth control but my lack of diet could be a factor. I've always had random sharp pains in my heart. Even before i took the pills. But, i stopped getting it for about a month or two. And it started again, i think--yesterday? I've also been very tired, but that maybe because i don't get enough sleep? I don't know. Don't have much of an appetite, or 'cause there's lack of food. Not enough nutrients in my diet. Could this be something serious? What illness am I having? --my heart just randomly hurts so bad. Where, sometimes it hurts to cough or even breathe. Cholesterol too high or what? Heeeelp.
Oh, right. I forgot to mention. I've been having a lot of back pains too.
Resolved Question: Low Total Cholesterol?
I recently took a pre-Life Insurance medical test that included urine and blood work. My total cholesterol was 139 which registered as too low. Is this something to worry about? I am a 24 yr old male, 5’9” 155 lbs. I am (obviously) not overweight but am not underweight either. I don’t eat poorly; I don’t drink anything with calories besides beer on the weekends. Are there other contributing factors to low total cholesterol? Is this indicative of nutritional deficiencies or general diet inadequacies?
Resolved Question: Do you know Info on FLUORIDE?
Hello there
Aside from having a bad diet, lack of exercise and mild depression due to lack of nutrition and not moving my body...I experienced intense hives for a couple of days...their gone now because I've made a MAJOR decision to change my life etc..
I'm homoeopathic medication (very natural, no side effects, FAR MORE EFFECTIVE THAN PREDNISONE!!!! )
and I'm doing a liver cleanse...
and I'm eating every 3 hours..veggies, protein etc etc..
BUT...I did some research on other factors to what could have caused the rash/hives...and there have been numerous cases of FLUORIDE in WATER CAUSING ALLERGIES..and causing hives and SKIN problems...
I've been boiling water and drinking it for a good 5 months...and I read today that boiling water will concentrate fluoride
could fluoride been the cause to the hives or at least contributed? (based on research--yes)
There is SO MUCH proven research that fluoride causes SO many negative side effects to your body...and it's never actually been proven that it helps your teeth etc...so if I want to stop having fluoride in my water...how can I make that happen exactly???
Help if you can
cheerz
Resolved Question: Has anyone heard of behavior change in horse when not allowed to crib ?
I have a 7 year old TB off the track that I do jumpers with, that is also a cribber. I have owned him for about 5 months now and he was very skinny when I got him (200 LBS under weight) so with a careful diet he has put on weight (very hard keeper) but then I think him cribbing was an added factor to him being soo skinny so I put a cribbing collar on him. Well, since not being abled to crib he has been a real JERK to ride to say the least bucking, running away with me and other things. I'm very knowledgeable when it comes to horses been around them all my life, just havent dealt with alot of cribbers. I know that cribbing releases chemicals in the brain causing a pleasurable effect I'm wondering if it causes him to be more calm ?? What do u guys think ?
He has only been acting this way the past 2 weeks since I started putting the collar on. Thats why I think the behavior and the cribbing are related. Also windsucking and cribbing is the SAME thing.
Resolved Question: How do I get rid of this mild but annoying condition?
Okay so I've been dealing with this minor condition for a few days and it has become really annoying. It all started when I got my period, my period usually comes along with diarrhea and such, but I've been taking contraceptives for 1 year, and since then, my period has been much milder, no diarrhea, no pain, no cramps, etc. This time it was different. I started getting diarrhea and a few days later a fever, now this was not your typical menstrual fever, (I don't possess a thermometer because I live abroad, far away from home, in an university campus) because I was so hot I literally thought I would explode. I took Nurofen and wrapped my feet in vinegar soaked socks and it went away, but the diarrhea didn't. I have been feeling bloated for like 5 days now, I can barely eat (well actually I can, but I get really nauseous and I have really really bad gas)...and well, now it looks like my fever is going to come back again. And the weirdest part is that my period won't go away..it's been 5 days, and it shouldn't be this long on contraceptives (I have very little flow though, so nothing big). I know, I know, it's the first time I'm living away from home so I've been eating random crap at random hours and stressing myself out really badly, so it's probably those factors that caused this. I would just like some simple advice, maybe a diarrhea-stomach cramp-orientated medicine I easily get in drugstores (I am currently living in the UK) and a suggested diet. Thanks a lot and sorry for all the unpleasant details. Cheers.
I've looked on the internet and it might be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)...but I'm not sure, because on there it says nothing about fever and I'm pretty sure that in my case, the two are related.
I feel slightly better now, I don't feel weak anymore and the fever is gone. Only problem is I feel really bloated after each meal, but no pain. Just feeling really gasy. Ugh.
Resolved Question: Need to know what size breast forms to use during transition from male to female?
I am a 24 year old male to female transsexual and I am seriously considering purchasing a pair of breast forms. I'm pretty much tired of using toilet paper, socks, and other soft fabric for breasts. I am not on hormones yet but I will be once I start living full time as a woman. I am 5'11' and weigh about 185 lbs. I also set a goal for myself I am looking go down to 165 lbs with diet and exercise. What size (cup size, that is) would look great on me based on my height and weight? Are there other factors I should consider? I also have pics on myspace at the link below that shows my weight, height, and shoulders, hopefully that can help you decide what type of breast forms would suit perfect on me. Thank you and I really appreciate your help and honesty.

Resolved Question: PANCREAS CANCER! Please read now......................!?
For the past 2 months my Grandma in the Philippines is suffering from
Pancreas Cancer and I am very sad that she is in stage 4. It has been two years since we last hugged each other I am just wondering, what is the cause of her disease? I look at wiki but I don't know which one:
Age (particularly over 60)[2]
Male gender
African-American ethnicity[2]
Smoking. Cigarette smoking nearly doubles one's risk, and the risk persists for at least a decade after quitting. [5]
Diets low in vegetables and fruits[citation needed]
Diets high in red meat[6]
Obesity[7]
Diabetes mellitus
Chronic pancreatitis has been linked, but is not known to be causal
Helicobacter pylori infection
Family history, 5-10% of pancreatic cancer patients have a family history of pancreatic cancer. The genes responsible for most of this clustering in families have yet to be identified. Pancreatic cancer has been associated with the following syndromes; autosomal recessive ataxia-telangiectasia and autosomal dominantly inherited mutations in the BRCA2 gene, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome due to mutations in the STK11 tumor suppressor gene, hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (Lynch syndrome), familial adenomatous polyposis, and the familial atypical multiple mole melanoma-pancreatic cancer syndrome (FAMMM-PC) due to mutations in the CDKN2A tumor suppressor gene.[8][1]
Gingivitis or periodontal disease.[9]
Alcohol might be a risk factor – see Pancreatic cancer section in Alcohol and cancer
When I lived with her for a decade, she did not qualify to all the things that I listed above EXCEPT she is 74 years old OR maybe she ate dirty foods. Please pray for my grandma because she has 3 months to live.
Resolved Question: Need to Lose Weight. Help?
okay, i'm 15 years old, 5'1'' and about 150 pounds. according to my BMI and my doctor, i'm overweight and at risk for developing diseases like diabetes.
i'd really like to get down to between 105-115 pounds. and if at all possible, i'd like to lose this weight by february...or earlier.
i've heard a lot about the south beach diet and how its good for regulating blood sugar and how some people lose like a pound a day on phase 1. *does it really work this well? *if so, what are some good south beach recipes?
i know exercise is a big factor when it comes to weight loss. i've always wanted to start...but i just don't know where to begin. i have access to a treadmill, elliptical, stair-climber-ish thing, bowflex, and free weight. i also have a good neighborhood for biking/walking (its about 1 mile all the way around). *what should i do to get the most out of my workout? *what exercises will burn the most calories? *what can i do to help tone my entire body?
finally, if i go on south beach, its gonna be hard to get fiber since i can't have bread or anything. i saw these fiber supplements at cvs called Fiber Choice Weight Management. *will they help? *do they have any harmful effects that i should know about?
any other weight loss tips will be greatly appreciated! just, please no crazy starvation diets or expensive diet pills. i'm 15! thanks in advance!
Resolved Question: ways to increase growth potential naturally ?
i would love to play college baseball but right now im 15 and i am 5'7 and height is definitly a factor. I only grew a quarter of an inch the past year which i find a bit unusual since guys are suppose to grow till they are 21. So i was wondering if there are any stretches, diets etc that are effective and can get me results fairly quickly ( matter of months hopefully)
Resolved Question: How long after weight loss and becoming more active will my period come back?
Ok, so about 2 months ago, I had started playing field hockey (my first team sport) and also going on a diet. That diet was OK at first, so I had my period that first month with field hockey and dieting, but then I started eating too little and went into starvation mode, while the field hockey season was getting harder with the start of school, too. I think because of all these factors, my period didn't come the second month. I told my mom, and she said it was probably because I had started playing a sport and also because school might have stressed me out (I didn't tell her about the starvation mode thing). I'm now starting to gradually work my way out of starvation mode, and field hockey season is officially over. I went from 109-about 100-101 pounds after starting field hockey and steadily lowering my caloric intake, and I am 13 years old, 5'0". I first had my period about a month before I turned 10, and it became regular when I was late 10 years old, early 11 years old. If my period were still regular right now, it would probably be coming within these next few days, but there doesn't seem to be any signs of it returning for this month. Does anyone know about how long it should take for my period to come back, or if it'll come back at all? Please, let it come back!
Oh, and P.S., I have never been sexually active or anything like that, so I doubt I'm pregnant.
Resolved Question: Weird dreams that not only I am having...?
Recently my father has been bringing up small details of dreams he's been having of the past (possibly), his father, his old house, etc. I had a dream this morning that kept me awake about a friend and I. At first a good friend (who I wish was more than that, haha) and I were sitting in his livingroom (which I have never seen) and his phone rang. The funny part was it rang to a piece of music he'd played before and although it sounded nothing like that, he insisted it was so I just shrugged and agreed. I may have woken up, I may not have, and next thing I know I'm walking near the church in my neighborhood and crossing the street with my best friend. We're walking down the sidewalk when we here about expiration dates and yogurt. Well, it seems the news and the government were strictly warning everyone not to buy yogurt after the 15th, (which is odd b/c 15 hardly has any significance in my life and it's the 25th today) but before was okay (my birthday is on the 14th). Anyways, we had both eaten yogurt recently and it was maybe the 15th or 16th in the dream, I wasn't sure, yet we were sure we'd eaten it past the "safe" time. The yogurt had somehow contained some kind of bacteria (it started with a v, and I was sure it was real but I can't recall the name or if it really was real or not) that caused an incurable cancerous diseases that happened quickly, horribly, painfully and caused diarrhea and weight loss, vomitting, and death. Well so I went home and saw my mom watching a show on a child with such a disease which was documentaried by the nurse with what she said was an X-ray, yet I knew that was impossible and the video quality was like with a camera and the color just a little off so it was only 10-20 years old (others have been prone to stupidity or naivity in my dreams, especially my friend in the previous dream with the phone, my mother, and my father, anyone really)...so I woke up, feeling a little unnerved. If my mom (who is not living with us right now, but is alive) was here, she'd probably say it was spiritual (which being Christian, was my first instinctive wonder) or that there was some kind of demon in the house. Seeing as how my father and I have both been having bad dreams I wondered if maybe it was a change of diet, simply the weather, or just coincidence. (Also, before that dream, when he woke up for work he came in to wake me up and said he thought that I'd said something or made a noise and I said I didn't think I did but when I thought about it, I remember dreaming that I'd woken up moments before and saying that I wasn't dreaming, so possibly I had said something...? I was also breathing very hard). What troubles me is that during the day, usually around 5 to 7 I can fall asleep easily after school, or usually after being asleep for an hour I can fall asleep very easy in the morning (obviously) but at night between 10-12 even on school nights, I have trouble sleeping the majority of the time because it seems like I can never find the proper position, I can't sleep, I randomly have a small trouble or change in breathing (which usually leads to me paranoiedly telling myself when to breathe in and out and making sure my pulse is normal which is only because I'm totally OCD about breathing and my heart for no reason at all...) so I wondered if maybe bad dreams, breathing heavy when I woke up was a health sign, diet, spiritual reasons (or if you aren't spiritual, unlike me, you may not factor that in), or just a dream.
Sorry for such a long message, but this hour in the morning none of my friends are awake yet and I find this the best place to ask questions...(obviously)
Resolved Question: I get so blown out of Proportion over diet and exercise?
Okay... So Im 19, and yes I can afford to loose a little weight... I checked my ideal weight calculator for me and it says Im really overweight. I am 5 foot 5 inches and I weight about 180-185. My weight calculator is around 145-155... not saying this is new for me... I have been upset about my weight for a while... any fabulous diet plans or exercises that will help me without me starving or overdoing myself? I know things like soda and caffeine and carbs is a big factor to cut out. But I still would love to eat healthy tasteful things without me starving myself, and yes I am fond of portions!
Voting Question: HELP!! Get this weight down!!!?
I've been trying to lose 10-20lbs for months. I'm 150lbs and 5'4", with a very petite frame. I've had this weight gain for about a year now, and I've been trying to get it off for about five months.
***I gained this weight because of an eating disorder -- my mother passed away a year ago, and I stopped eating for a few months, then binged on food for the rest of the year.
I've tried eating well. I've eaten nothing but plants (I've become vegetarian since then). I've had the occasional pizza or pasta every 5-6 weeks. I've eaten primarily nuts, soybeans, artichokes, salad, carrots, healthy energy bars, water, gatorade (for exercises), and fruits. I eat multiple meals a day, sometimes I even blend 6 fruits and drink the smoothie all day.
I work out everyday. I've biked two miles five days out of the week for about 5 months now. I also walk everywhere, so it probably adds another mile or two just walking. I do crunches every once in a while (about once a week) for also five months.
I've talked to a nutritionist who urged me to eat more to up my metabolism. I did, and nothing changed except I still am terribly hungry after eating... I've tried Slimfast but apparently food isn't the factor; both the doctor and nutritionist said I need to eat more.
I also thought that maybe I was supposed to be this weight. When I went to get a physical the doctor said I was overweight according to his BMI calculations... and that I was on the high end of it. When I asked him what to do, he just said, "eat right and exercise more" -- which I have been doing!!
So now I'm at my wit's end. I'm 21 and I feel horrible about being overweight, and I'm afraid I'll gain more as time goes on. I was wondering if anyone knew of any diet pills, any kind of dietary supplement that will kick my metabolism, anything? Some suggestions, tips, anything that could perhaps kick this weight in the ass and go? Would doctors prescribe a dietary pill just to drop 10-20 lbs?
Voting Question: What are the odds of me growing up to 6 foot or taller?
What are the odds of me growing up to 6 foot or taller?
What are the odds of me growing up to 6 foot or taller?
age: 14 turning 15 this tuesday
height: 5' 9''
dad: 5 11
mom: 5 2
note:
dad has average genes.. he's the tallest among his siblings, but his grandfather was tall.........and dad dieted a lot back then when he was young so maybe that had an effect on his height....like malnourished but not on purpose!
my mom has tall genes... my cousins on her side are around 6 foot and up...........
I'm a late bloomer
very few body hair
no pimples currently
I know it's genetics, but what important things should I have like physical activity and vitamins or food?
one more is having a lack of physical activity a negative factor? thanks!
Resolved Question: Will this help at all?
I'm using a "cruncher" (It's not a machine, but something that tilts up as you hold the sides/top of it and push up to do crunches) and I was wondering if 400 reps a day (not all at the same time) would keep me in shape when added with daily use of an eliptical (aka "stair stepper" machine). I use this for about 10 minutes on a medium resistance level. Is this a good amount of exercise for a day? My diet is good, so that won't be much of a factor. Plenty of protein, fiber, nutrients, and calcium. And I have about 5 glasses of water a day when not exercising, 7 or 8 when I am.
Any tips or different methods would be nice too. I plan to lose 10 pounds within a few months, so I'm not exactly in a hurry.
The elliptical I added in just for cardio, and the cruncher just to get a flatter stomach.
Thanks, cf.
Resolved Question: Is there any substantial proof that vegetarians live 5+ years longer than meat eaters?
Has there ever been any studies on this? (link please)
If so how can diet be attributed 100% for living longer when there are hundreds if not thousands of other factors that determine lifespan? things like genetics, exercise, etc etc.
It just seems like bs to me because no type of eating is inherently healthier. it's about how you go about that particular eating style, i don't see how a person who eats chicken and fish in moderation with the occasional steak is killing themselves so much more than the person who is vegetarian and also eats healthily.
Please don't tell me it's because people who eat meat get cancer, or heart disease. if you eat meat in moderation like you should and rarely eat red meat you will not be at an elevated risk for any heart problems.
thanks
so your telling me the most recent study backing this claim up happened over 80 years ago?
call me a pessimist but that seems just a bit dated to be anywhere near accurate in todays world.
I am just trying to better understand my vegetarian brothers and sisters on this world.
Kim, that first link does not say anything about actuallifespan, it talks about how vegans are at a lower risk. Didn't bother to check on the second one since the first was not what i even asked.
what are you even talking about generic?
i think you are confused generic, ashley is a rather common name. i very much doubt i am the only person on Y/A with that username.

Resolved Question: How can I fight off my low self-esteem as I gain weight in my pregnancy?
I am 28 weeks[7 months/beginning of the 3rd trimester] pregnant right now, with my first child. I had been dealing with anorexia(i'm hesitant to call it that, as I was not underweight) for about half a year when I found out I was pregnant, and was typically going a whole week without eating a full meal. This caused me to feel extreme guilt if i even came close to half-way finishing a meal. I lost 45-50 pounds in 4 months.
I was 150 when I got pregnant, and once I found out my boyfriend immediately had me start eating as much as he could get me to, quickly adjusting me to a normal diet, and made me quit smoking, and start eating meat for the first time in 5 years. Because of those 3 factors I gained a lot of weight initially, but since then I have been consistently gaining 7-10pounds a month, rather than the normal 4.
I currently am 205!!!!! And still only in month 7!
I have been struggling MAJORLY with my eating. I'm definitely eating enough but I have to fight with myself before I do eat, usually going ino the kitchen and leaving without eating several times before I do eat. Every month when I go see my OB-GYN it ruins my day and completely crushes me to see how much weight I'm gaining. My boyfriend is constantly telling me 'calm down, pregnant women gain weight, it's natural' but that doesn't help me because I'm always being reminded at my doctor that I'm gaining waaaayyy more than is necessary. It's really hard for me to enjoy my pregnancy because I just wish it was over and I could start losing weight.
I will repeat, I AM eating plenty!! I'm not doing anything to hurt my child. I eat at least 2-3 meals a day and snacks, so NO i'm NOT harming my baby and/or starving myself. This problem is dealing strictly with a self-esteem issue; I would not be able to live with myself if I was being so selfish as to starve my baby.
I would assume that would be apparent with my stating the fact that I've gained approx. 50 pounds already!
Thank you to all those of you who left helpful and supportive comments. Some of you were a bit rude and harsh, and I hope there's no more comments from people like you now that I've cleared this up.

Resolved Question: What would you like to ask?
my daughter is 8 years old she wieghs 160lbs she is 5 ft 3 inches tall ,she wears size 10 shoes and puts weight on at an approximate rate of 5lbs a month, no matter the diet. Her growth rate is phenominal. Her father is 6ft 9 and I am 5ft 9, her fathers side of the family has large feet and are very tall people, but as for her, besides all that, I introduced rice cereal in her formular at 2 months old because she cried all the time and only stopped when I fed her or when her tummy was full. She has been and still is suffering from complications such as constipation, very large and hard stool when she does go, insatiable appetite, some bladder problems coupled with the above mentioned factors, which of course is affecting her overall self amage. I blame this on the early introduction of solids added to her genetic make up, but could there be other factors?and if so is there a way to fix this?"

Resolved Question: I need Help in Losing Weight! Is this diet ok? ?
I have never lost weight before. I weighed 12stone4lb and am 5,7 in height. I needed to take some drastic action and have given my diet a complete overhaul. These are my basic rules and excerise in a week and i want to know if you think this is enough to get to my target weight of 10stone before Xmas. I have heard about the starvation factor if you dont eat enough and I want to avoid this. I am 28 and have a BMI of 25.
Exercise: swimming 5 times a week for 20 minutes, 2 aerobic classs (40 minutes) and one pilates class.
Diet:
Breakfast: one slice of wholemeal nimble bread, poached egg or one bowl of oatabix with soya milk.
Snack: apple or melon
Lunch: melon or low calorie soup
snack:apple or smoothie
Dinner: grilled turkey/salmon or chicken with a large portion of mixed veg.
At least 3lt of water a day
Any suggestions would be great!
Just to clarify, I have been to the doctors and she has told me i need to aim for 10 to 10 1/2 stone.
Voting Question: Can weight loss be dependent on different factors?
Ok, I have read a lot of weight loss questions on here. I always see that 1/2 pounds a week is what people are supposed to lose. And if it is more, it is just water weight.
I am 5'4" and I start working out when I hit 240 pounds.
My question is this, is it possible that weight lose will vary from person to person depending on different factors such as diet, activity level, metabolism and other things?
For my weight and height, I am considered very obese. However, oddly I am not that out of shape. I can play DDR (sure people know what this is) on heavy quite often, I walk a lot and so on. So, when I started working out, I was able to work out at a harder level then most people in my condition.
anyway, let me get to the point. I eat about 3 meals a day, Rarely I only have time for two. I make sure they are healthy portioned, not over sized meals. My main source of protein is Chicken, but I also eat turkey and fish. I very rarely eat out, and prepare all my meals myself. And each meal usually has mainly veggies (broccoli, string beans, salad so on ---and I don't eat dressings) and one meal alwas contains a little carb.
Oh, and I only drink water, but that has been a child hood habit
I eat at least 2 snacks a day, usually 3. Sometimes 4 if I miss a meal do to being overly busy. Snacks range from a number of different fruits.
As for working out. I do this about two hours a day.I am on the treadmill for about an hour in the morning and an hour in the late afternoon. Running for each session ranges from 35-50 minutes. So each day I get 60- 100 minutes of running. Sometimes I take a day or two off during the week from running.
I still play DDR and walk alot.
I wasn't planning on losing so much, but in August (when i started), I lost a little over 20 pounds. I just contributed it to my body not liking being this weight ( I have never been over 200 before) , and that I can be more active, and work out more then people in my condition.
Also, I still eat things I like, just not as often. every now and then I eat "bad things" if I go to the movies i'll eat nachos or some cookie dough bites. every once in a while I have a cupcake from my fave place, or a few cookies. However, if this happens it is once every other week.
I can fit things I couldn't fit before.. o.O and stuff
Is it really just water weight ...... Last year I had to jump up to a size 18, two of the jeans were kind of tight when I bought them. I just tried them on, and they feel better then when I first bought them.
Voting Question: Growth&Fitness questions?
I have been researching and asking around about these following questions:
1) What are determining factors for teenage growth?
2) What should your diet consist of to continue your growth
3) Does alcohol&tobacco effect growth (small-moderate amounts)
4) Can lifting weights stunt growth
Reasons for this: I am 15 and about 5'4 and want to continue growing yet put on muscle...
any other tips on that would help

Resolved Question: Teaching English abroad: Korea or Spain?
I'm applying to two programs, one in Korea and one in Spain, to teach English. Here's a comparison:
1. In Korea I would run my own classroom, in Spain I would be an assistant. I have five years teaching experience.
2. In Spain I would get paid about $1000/month, in Korea I would make twice that.
3. In Korea the housing is paid for, in Spain it is not (for those of you who know the cost of living in Spain, I already know, el sueldo es una mierda).
4. I have friends in Spain, I don't know anyone in Korea.
5. I like the food of both countries equally. Some Spanish food I'm not crazy about, some Korean food I wouldn't walk a mile for. Bulgogi and kimchee pancakes are good, but I'm much more familiar with Spanish food. Generally I follow a whole-foods diet.
6. In Korea it's likely that I'll pay down my student loans and maybe save for something nice. In Spain I will probably have to defer my loans, which I have done so many times it's not even funny.
7. This is a small factor, but in Korea I most likely wont have an oven to cook with, just a hot plate. I use the oven a lot at home, so I would have to change the way I cook and eat. Although in Spain it might get so hot sometimes I wont want to use an oven, anyways.
8. On a whole, education is valued much more in Korea than in Spain.
So what do you think? Which one sounds better? I was thinking I might be able to pull off doing both, like if I go to Korea and save my money so I'll be able to afford Spain later on.

1: A car mechanic is given a 1966 Mustang to fix. The owner's complaint is that the engine runs roughly, especially when the car is accelerating. The mechanic's first guess as to the source of the problem is that the fuel mix is too rich. After adjusting the fuel mix valve, the problem persists, so the mechanic then guesses that the sparkplug advance mechanism is faulty. Replacing the sparkplug advance mechanism (the diaphragm attached to the distributor) fixes the problem, and the fixed car is returned to the owner.

Resolved Question: Autism and artificial sweeteners?
I'm the mother of two autistic children, ages 5 and 6. There is absolutely no family history of this disorder, so the fact that I have 2 kids with autism was really quite shocking. I've attempted to examine the possible causes or contributing factors, other than genetics, that may have lead to their autism. I am healthy, young, and have never smoked, used drugs, or drank alcohol. Looking back, though, I remember that I did consume moderate amounts of artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame (Nutrasweet) and Sucralose (Splenda) throughout both pregnancies, and while breastfeeding. Although the manufacturers claim that both substances are safe for pregnant and nursing mothers, I was wondering whether anyone else has noticed a possible link between artificial sweetener consumption in pregnancy and/or breastfeeding and autism. Are there any mothers out there who consumed these sweeteners and have autistic children? Or, on the contrary, are you a mother of an autistic child who followed a completely natural, additive-free diet while pregnant/nursing?
Resolved Question: does this sound like this diet would work?
I have though of a diet and i'm not sure if it will work so i'm asking you.
If you keep a journal on what you eat and the calorie amount you will have an idea of how much you are taking in right. And you have to choose how many calories you would like to eat each day. here's the catch you can eat over the amount you choose. say if you want to eat 1,000 calories a day and you eat 1,300 so you know that you have to burn 300 calories. and of course i know it's not healthy to only eat 1,000 calorie but that was just an example. I don't know if this would work and I have some exercising rules too. work out each day for as long as you need to. but instead of going to the gym do some more mental and physical workouts, do yoga or strength and stretching. and a few tips only eat in the kitchen so that you don't start eating like crazy. and i have a few healthy low calorie and carb recipes to but they are very long, well they are actually a few from the 5 factor diet. so do you think that this diet would work and please be honest i can take it
thanks
